We assign morality to an object regardless of the fact that it is the product of human beings from the moment ink meets paper to the final press of gold leaf into the cover. The context of its creation and its provenance, coupled with wild rumors and hyperbole, leads us to assume the worst. The book itself has no agency, no intent, no will of its own. Though they might contain thoughts and ideas that are undoubtedly evil incarnate, those words are placed there by an author with the intention of spreading their vile rhetoric. Now, I can see you readying your pitchforks of “Um, actually…” and lighting the torches of pedantry, but hear me out. I’m going to start with the bad news first: There’s no such thing as an evil book.

A magical, timeless summer in the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Douglas Spaulding-remembered forever by the incomparable Ray Bradbury. It was a summer of sorrows and marvels and gold-fuzzed bees. Of half-burnt firecrackers, of gathering dandelions, of Grandma’s belly-busting dinner. A summer of green apple trees, mowed lawns, and new sneakers. The summer of ’28 was a vintage season for a growing boy. In this book, we follow young Ray as he discovers writing in an effort to record so many of the innocent wonders of one fateful summer far away and long ago. ĭandelion Wine begins Ray Bradbury’s youthful adventures. I took a long look at the green apple trees and the old house I was born in and the house next door where lived my grandparents, and all the lawns of the summer I grew up in. I am grateful that he recorded so many of his memories and imaginations from our favorite back-east town. Original story illustration for “Summer in the Air” by Amos Sewell from THE SATURDAY EVENING POST, Feb, 18, 1956 “And her name is Cécile de Troyes, which you very well know, so quit pretending otherwise.” “Perhaps our mistake was in not finding you a deaf one,” Marc said. I hardly need another woman in my life telling me what to do, and it would mean I could do all the talking and she the listening.” “On second thought, perhaps it wouldn’t be dreadful at all. “She isn’t mute, is she? That would be dreadful.” He leaned back against the chair, his strange eyes fixed on me. Tristan peered at me as though I were a curious insect. “Even if I hadn’t a gag of magic in my mouth, I wouldn’t have dared spoken. I will love you until the day I take my last breath and that is the truth. He stopped, the weight of his sorrow greater than any mountain. The cold of the water bit into my skin and I sobbed, terrified. I tried to hold on to him, but my fingers wouldn’t work. “Tristian, no, no, no!” I tried to scream, but I couldn’t. I tried to struggle, but he was too strong. He got to his feet and stepped into the water. You promised.” He had to be coming with me - he said he was and Tristan couldn’t lie. He kissed my lips, silencing my questions. That you’ll travel wherever the wind takes you. Dance in spring rains and let snowflakes melt on your tongue in winter. That you’ll gallop on horseback through summer meadows. “Promise me you’ll get better,” he whispered. I wanted to wipe them away, tell him that everything would be all right, but my body was locked stiff with pain. He turned his face to me, and it was streaked with tears. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Quicksilver by rj andersonIn fact, she’s attracted new interest in the form of an obsessed ex-cop turned investigator for a genetics lab. Mikage feels strangely comfortable in their apartment and agrees to stay, sleeping on the giant sofa in the kitchen, next to a window framing a dark sky dotted with stars. It seems perfectly natural to Yuichi to see Eriko as his mother as she’s so feminine. Mikage is dazzled by Eriko’s beauty and amazed when Yuichi explains that “ is a man.” Eriko was actually Yuichi’s biological father, but after Yuichi’s biological mother died of cancer when Yuichi was a baby, Eriko decided to become a woman, open a nightclub, and raise Yuichi as his mother. When Mikage enters Yuichi’s apartment, she is drawn to the kitchen full of plates, pots, and pans, and sinks into the massive, soft sofa. Yuichi seems to glow with light and Mikage is compelled to accept the invitation. Yuichi suggests that Mikage come to stay with him and his mother Eriko for a while. Yuichi goes to Mikage’s university but she doesn’t know him well, although Yuichi was close with Mikage’s grandmother. The only place Mikage can sleep is in the kitchen, which is where she’s been for days when Yuichi Tanabe knocks on her door. Now that her grandmother is dead, Mikage has nobody in the world and feels utterly alone in the dark universe. Mikage’s mother and father died when Mikage was very young, so Mikage’s grandmother raised her. Mikage’s grandmother has just died, and Mikage is in a haze of grief, unable to sleep. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Fragments by marilyn monroeOL20447269W Page_number_confidence 83.66 Pages 266 Partner Innodata Pdf_module_version 0.0.18 Ppi 360 Rcs_key 24143 Republisher_date 20220301165409 Republisher_operator Republisher_time 479 Scandate 20220223202654 Scanner Scanningcenter cebu Scribe3_search_catalog isbn Scribe3_search_id 9780007395347 Tts_version 4. Who knows what other amazing stories she would’ve written had she lived longer.Īs far as we know, Emily never formed a romantic relationship with anyone. Emily Brontë died when she was 30 from tuberculosis. She was shy, quiet and kept to herself, even though she was interested in other people’s life stories. She was close to her family and very attached to her home in Yorkshire. Together, they created the fictional world of Gondal, wrote poetry and read it aloud to each other.Įmily is thought to have lived a secluded life and made few friends throughout her (short) life. She was the second youngest of the surviving Brontë siblings her younger sister Anne was also her best friend. Emily BrontëĮmily only wrote one novel: Wuthering Heights. In this blog post, I don’t go into great details about the novels, but I do explain why I love/don’t love them and list some interesting facts about the authors’ lives. However, I only started reading them last year (was too busy partying at uni, I guess). I guess I first heard about the Brontës when I was in high school and then studied them properly at university (I studied English). (This «ranking» is obviously just my opinion!) Written for Robert Browning, who had affectionately nicknamed her his "little Portuguese," the sequence is a celebration of marriage, and of one of the most famous romances of the nineteenth century. Some of her poetry has been noted in recent years for strong feminist themes, but the poems for which Elizabeth Barrett Browning is undoubtedly best know are Sonnets from the Portuguese. In this elegant format, the delicate interplay between the poems and the lovers' letters become vividly apparent.Įlizabeth Barrett Browning was a prolific writer and reviewer in the Victorian period, and in her lifetime, her reputation as a poet was at least as great as that of her husband, poet Robert Browning. For the next 12 months, he and Elizabeth Barrett exchanged letters and confidences. I love you too", Robert Browning wrote in January 1845, thus initiating the most celebrated literary correspondence of the 19th century. "I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett. |
